What is a cable entry cover?

A cable entry cover - also called a desk grommet or cable grommet - is a flush-fit cover that conceals the cutout where cables pass through a desk, table, or panel. Rather than leaving a raw hole or routing cables over the edge of the surface, a cable entry cover gives the cable run a finished, intentional look.

The Artifex range is machined from solid brass, steel or aluminium and finished by hand. Each piece installs into a routed cutout and is available in a selection of finishes to suit a range of furniture styles - from contemporary home offices to heritage joinery and commercial fit-outs.

Which cable entry is right for your surface?

The right choice depends on the surface, the number of cables, and the look you're after.

The Cable Entry Grommet (31mm inner opening) suits a single or paired cable run - a laptop or phone charger, monitor cable, or lamp - where a precise, refined opening is the goal. It installs flush and is our most specified piece for bedsides, desks and workstations.

The Cable Entry Round is a larger-profile option suited to desks and entertainment units where more cables need to pass through in a single point. It's the practical choice for busier cable setups and starts from $80.

The Cable Entry Square offers a straight-edged profile suited to contemporary joinery and custom-built furniture where a circular cutout would feel out of place.

The Ceiling & Wall Cable Grommet is built for installations that go beyond the desk - AV fit-outs, home theatre setups, and architectural joinery where cables pass through walls or ceiling panels. Its push-fit lid and O-ring seal keep the opening closed and clean when not in use.

Choosing a finish

All four cable entries are available in brass or aluminium across a selection of finishes. The simplest way to choose is to match the finish to the other metal already in the space - drawer handles, lamp bases, monitor arms, or tapware.

  • Brushed Stainless - lean and versatile; a neutral metallic finish that pairs easily with both warm and cool palettes, ideal for contemporary spaces with mixed materials.
  • Brushed Aluminium - cool and understated; suits white, grey, and concrete palettes
  • Matt Black, Matt White or Dark Bronze PC - strong contrast against light timber, stone, or white lacquer
  • Raw Sanded Brass - warm and refined; a matte starting point that develops its own character over time
  • Aged Brass - pre-patinated for a lived-in, architectural finish; suits darker and heritage interiors
  • Bronze - deep and rich; suited to layered, considered spaces with warm tones

Brass finishes are live finishes. They will develop a natural patina in response to their environment - each piece becomes unique over time. This is part of the character of solid brass, not a defect.

FAQs

  • What size hole do I need to cut for a desk grommet?

The Cable Entry Grommet requires a 31mm diameter cutout. The Round and Square have their own cutout sizes listed on each product page. If you're having a piece custom-made, confirm the size with your maker before ordering.  We recommend the cut out is completed by your joiner.

  • Can I use a desk grommet in a wall or ceiling?

The desk range is designed for horizontal surfaces only. For walls and ceilings, the Ceiling & Wall Cable Grommet is the right product - it has an O-ring seal and push-fit lid built for through-panel routing.

  • Will the brass finish change colour over time?

Yes - brass is a live finish that develops a natural patina over time. Each finish starts differently: Raw Sanded is matte and warm, Aged Brass arrives pre-patinated, and Bronze is the deepest tone. Brushed Aluminium and Matt Black are stable and don't patina.

  • Are these suitable for surfaces other than desks?

Yes. The range is regularly used in dining tables, bedside tables, entertainment units, and custom joinery. Check the product page dimensions before ordering to confirm compatibility with your surface thickness.
